Somesville Central House

The Somesville Central House is a historic residence in the heart of the village of Somesville. Originally built in 1839, it's enjoyed being apart of the rich history of Mount Desert Island for nearly two centuries. In the 1880s the "Central House" was a hotel, owned by Mr. William Fennelly. He advertised the property as being able to accommodate up to 30 guests "for all who wished to avoid the crowds at Bar Harbor and quietly enjoy the beauties of Mount Desert will find this a very attractive place." We couldn't agree more as this lovely, restored house is the perfect spot for your extended family while visiting Acadia National Park!

The classic New England house provides guests with many updated amenities while maintaining the feel of an older Colonial home. There are many beautiful antique furnishings, lovely rustic hardwood flooring, and a gorgeous kitchen. An addition to the main house was added many years ago, and provides a nice quiet suite for grandparents or another family/friends. The suite is "attached" to the main house with a breezeway, on the second floor, or can be accessed at the side entry to the property on the first floor. There is a nice side porch, fire pit and basketball hoop. Just along the side of the property is a lovely walking path that goes to the cemetery where the original settlers on Mount Desert Island are buried. We recommend taking a walk with your morning coffee to the bench at the library and enjoy some of the most striking views on the Island.

There are 4 bedrooms in the main house: 2 queen bedrooms, 1 double bedroom and a bedroom with 2 twins, all on the 2nd floor. The suite has a queen bedroom and private bathroom (with shower). The "breezeway" features a small bedroom with a daybed with trundle.

Also nearby is the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary—a leisurely walk through the woods and along Somes Pond. Echo Lake is just two miles away, as are Beech Hill Mountain trail, Acadia Mountain trail and St. Sauveur Mountain trail.

Amenities include WIFI, gas BBQ grill, 2 flat screen TVs with ROKU, washer/dryer, dishwasher. There is parking for 4 cars. Click here for list of amenities.

Enjoy close proximity to Long Pond for swimming and kayaking/paddleboarding! Just 8 minutes to the Acadia National Park Loop Road, and 10 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, or Southwest Harbor!

Lots to enjoy while here: whale watch tours, wonderful lobster dining, shopping, deep sea fishing, kayaking, scenic tours! In Acadia you will enjoy nature walks, lake fishing, hiking, swimming and beaching. Mountains, ocean, lakes, and parks are all at your fingertips. Kids activities include Acadia Fun Park, mini-golf, Diver Ed's boat tour, Acadia ranger program.
