“Aloha”

We are so pleased to announce a new addition to our roster of cottages. “Aloha” is an historic gem of Bar Harbor, and one of the few private residences with shorefrontage on the bay. It’s a very special property and location.  This 8,000+ square-foot “cottage” was built during the Gilded Age for Mrs. Robert B. Potter, the widow of a Civil War General. It was designed by her brother-in-law, renowned architect William Appleton Potter. The home was originally called Westbridge (and occasionally listed as Allison Cottage in early records). By 1904–1905, it was renamed Aloha as Mrs. Potter began leasing the grand estate to high-society elites, including George Washington Vanderbilt II (builder of the Biltmore) in 1904 and New York socialite William Rhinelander Stewart in 1906. Alohais historically significant for being one of the few grand, oceanfront Gilded Age mansions that completely survived the catastrophic 1947 fire that destroyed most of Bar Harbor!

This 3-story, 9-bedroom “cottage” is an amazing property for your large and extended family. With views of Bar Island (which you can walk to at low tide), a beach that’s great for swimming, launching kayaks/paddleboards, and expansive grounds and gardens, there’s plenty of space and activity to accommodate every member of your family! Walk to restaurants and shops in downtown Bar Harbor, take the whale-watch cruise or other ocean boat tour, departing just a couple of blocks away, travel to Acadia National Park’s Loop Road, just a mile or so away (there are even trails that are within walking distance)!

“Aloha” features several sitting and family rooms so all can spread out or find a cozy spot for a good book. There are verandas on the main and 2nd floor levels, where wonderful sea breezes waft in.

The main level features a living room, formal dining room, “sun” room, family room, king bedroom with full bathroom, half bathroom and kitchen (with breakfast table).

The 2nd floor features 2 king bedrooms and 3 queen bedrooms. On this floor are 2 full bathrooms and 2 shower-only bathrooms.

The 3rd floor has 1 king bedroom, 1 queen bedroom and a bedroom with a twin bed and trundle (2 twin beds). There is also a full bathroom on this floor.

Amenities include WIFI, gas BBQ grill, washer/dryer, dishwasher.

An older house, with a family-friendly environment, Aloha has many homey touches, accrouterments and furnishings. The decor is eclectic and diverse throughout! Plenty of parking, plenty of lawn for “play” space, and grounds that feature beautiful gardens, lovingly planted by the owner. Truly a wonderful and unique experience for your vacation in Maine!

For 2026, it is available from June 27-August 15.
